10. Comedy Night (PC)
Comedy Night is a game I almost didn't recommend because it felt more like a heavily relied social game experiment. You can sing, debate, and obviously make some jokes to spit on the mic with other users. Game exploded at launch and the developer is highly active on the game. Great to fucking around with people and just socialize in. On top of that it's cheap.
9. Sky Rogue (PC)
Sky Rogue is your basic flight sim arcade game however has some very attractive low-poly visuals and procedurally generated missions. On top of that, has Steam Workshop to download other peoples aircrafts. I've downloaded Raiden aircrafts to the X-Wing. Great replay value at a decent price. Just got out of Early Access on Steam too.
8. Iron Crypticle (PC)
A simple arcade game that's reminiscent of Robotron and Smash TV. You're an armored hero going through procedurally generated dungeons destroying an onslaught of baddie. The visuals and music to the retro aesthetic is very nicely done. Compete on the leaderboards for highest score. Perfectly delivered.
7. Nidhogg 2 (PC, PS4)
Nidhogg is a super simplistic, yet minimalist (at least the original in terms of visual design) fighting game where it's 1v1 with your opponent and there's a bit of a tug and pull mechanic. Kill each other in pixelated gore and move on to your opponents side of the screen until you get eaten by the Nidhogg. Vastly improved visual enhancements (which some thought were ugly, but I love it) and gameplay. Very worth it for good couch multiplayer play.
6. River City Ransom: Underground (PC)
The River City Ransom games have held a high place in my heart. It was one of the first NES games I've ever played and I loved the RPG/Fighting mechanics that made it a way ahead of it's time. It's no-brainer that this version is no different but with a few enhanced balanced fighting mechanics and it's truly impressive pixelated animation goodness. The best multiplayer co-op game you''ll play.
5. Sine Mora Ex (PC)
This Ex version is a more definitive version with gameplay fixes and additional content. On the base game however is the interesting artstyle that's topped off with a deep engrossing story-mode. Gameplay is a straight-up Shmup game. Visuals are on-point and delivers everything what defines a good shmup.
4. Strafe (PC, PS4)
Despite having a shitty launch, Strafe managed to redeem itsself when it launched the Millenium Update. It's essentially a 90's themed twitch-shooter with procedurally generated levels. The Low-Poly design is top-notch. I definitely recommended and one of my most hyped about games of 2017.
3. Portal Knights (PC, PS4, XB1, and the Nintendo Switch)
Imagine mixing Legend of Zelda and Minecraft and you get yourself Portal Knights. You can build all sorts of stuff while exploring floating lands. Towns and quests all procedurally generated and gives out enough content to last you a while. Co-op is really fun and developers are super active on updates.
2. Rivals of Aether (PC, XB1)
A Super Smash Bros. clone done right. Instead of famous Nintendo characters it's colorful Disney-like 16-bit animals duking it out Smash style. A highly addictive brawling game and the competitive scene is growing.
1. StarCrawlers (PC)
A Spacepunk themed CRPG where you take jobs from mega-corporations to hunt bounties, and other oddball jobs. A persistent procedurally generated world with a lot of replay value. I highly recommend it. This is my favorite game of 2017. Developers did such a good job on it. Thanks a lot. :)
